Weight Loss

Providing Medically Supervised Weight loss

According to the CDC in 2016, more than one-third of Americans are obese.

Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, some of the leading causes of preventable death.

The most common causes of obesity:

  • Excessive carbohydrate intake
  • Hormone imbalance
  • Food allergies
  • Side effects from medications
  • Eating out of stress or depression
  • Lack of exercise
  • Insulin Resistance

What is Insulin Resistance?

  • Insulin signals muscle, fat and liver to uptake glucose into the cell. Also signals liver to stop making glucose.
  • Insulin resistance is the impaired ability to do any of this in the presence of insulin.
  • Insulin resistance is a continuum. Hyperinsulinemia→impaired glucose disposal→Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)→Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH)→Type 2 Diabete Melitis (T2DM).
  • Progression goes from insulin resistance in the muscle to insulin resistance in the liver and then type 2 diabetes.
  • Insulin resistant participants were able to store far less muscle glycogen meaning difficulty building or maintaining muscle.

Criteria for Metabolic syndrome (IR)

  • Waist circumference more than 40 inches in men and 35 inches in women
  • Elevated triglycerides 150 milligrams per deciliter of blood (mg/dL) or greater
  • Reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) less than 40 mg/dL in men or less than 50 mg/dL in women
  • Elevated fasting glucose of l00 mg/dL or greater
  • Blood pressure values of systolic 130 mmHg or higher and/or diastolic 85 mmHg or higher
